Abstract

Coliform bacteria are often found in Fresh cows milk due to their contamination to the environment, cattle feed and drinking, unsterilized equipment, and unaseptic milking processes. Banyuwangi is an area with several cattle farms and common consumption of raw cow milk. This study aimed to determine the total plate count (TPC), most probable number (MPN), and identification of coliform bacteria in raw cow milk in Kabupaten Banyuwangi. Analytical descriptive research was conducted on 30 samples of raw cow milk from 5 cattle farms in Kabupaten Banyuwangi between April and June 2021. The results showed that 7 (23.3%) samples in this study met the TPC requirement but 23 (76.7%) samples exceeded the TPC by SNI. In addition, 10 (33.3%) samples met the MPN requirements but 20 (66.7%) samples exceeded the MPN by SNI. It was concluded that most of fresh cows milk in Kabupaten Banyuwangi have not been eligible to consume due to high TPC, MPN and coliform contamination. Common coliform bacteria found in Fresh cows milk in Kabupaten Banyuwangi were Escherichia coli, Enterobacter sp., and Klebsiella sp., respectively. Further study was needed to identify coliform species and analyze other parameters of fresh cows milk in Kabupaten Banyuwangi according to SNI.
