Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy
Policy on the Use of Generative AI
The Journal of Indonesian Medical Laboratory and Science (JoIMedLabS) has created a policy to control the use of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies, which writers are increasingly using while writing scientific articles. The journal will keep a careful eye on developments in this area and update its policies as needed.
Policy for Authors
Use of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Tools in Scientific Writing
This guideline pertains solely to the writing process and excludes the application of AI for data analysis or the formulation of scientific conclusions in research.
Purpose of AI Use
Generative AI and AI tools can be used by authors just to improve the papers' linguistic quality and readability. Human oversight is required when using such technologies, and the writers must carefully review and revise the results. It is crucial to understand that although AI can produce writing that seems authoritative, it may contain biases, mistakes, or insufficient information.
Responsibility and Disclosure
The content of their work is entirely the responsibility of the authors. To maintain openness and foster confidence among all parties involved in the publication process, the use of AI technologies must be declared in the submission and will be included in the final article.
Exclusion of AI as an Author
It is not possible to list AI tools as co-authors or authors. Being an author entails accountability and doing tasks that are exclusive to humans. Writers need to make sure their work is unique, adheres to moral principles, and doesn't violate anybody else's rights.
Use of AI in Illustrations and Graphic Content
Prohibition on AI-Generated or Altered Images
It is forbidden to create, modify, or process images in manuscripts using generative AI or AI techniques. Changes to color balance, contrast, and brightness are only allowed provided they don't affect the data that is displayed.
Exception
The name and specifications of the AI tool used must be included in the "Methods" section if the use of AI is a component of the research approach (biomedical imaging, for example).
Policy for Reviewers
Confidentiality and Use of AI Tools
It is forbidden to upload manuscripts that are being reviewed, or any portion of them, to AI tools since doing so could violate author confidentiality and intellectual property rights. Since review comments may include private information about the article and its authors, this regulation also applies to them.
Since the peer review process necessitates critical thinking and independent evaluation—tasks that AI cannot perform—the use of generative AI to support scientific reviewing is prohibited. The content of reviews is entirely the responsibility of the reviewers.
As long as confidentiality guidelines are followed, the journal permits the use of safe AI tools for activities including detecting plagiarism, determining the completeness of manuscripts, and locating qualified reviewers.
Policy for Editors
Every manuscript that is sent in for review must be kept private. The writers' rights and confidentiality may be violated if they are uploaded, in whole or in part, to AI technologies. In a similar vein, it is prohibited to employ generative AI to support editorial judgments.
Critical thought and objectivity are necessary for manuscript evaluation, and only human editors can offer these qualities. Editors are solely in charge of the editorial procedure, making final judgments about papers, and informing authors of their decisions.
